CERTIFICATE IN CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE

The Certificate in Classical Architecture program provides architects and designers with a working knowledge of classical architectural design. Requirements for completion ensure participants build a broad foundation of skills and knowledge in the ICAA core curriculum. The CCA serves as a catalyst for deeper appreciation and understanding of the classical tradition.

There are four paths to earning the certificate:

  1. Completion of the ICAA Intensive in Classical Architecture plus elective Continuing Education (CE) courses;

  2. Completion of the ICAA Summer Studio in Classical Architecture;

  3. Continuing education courses in approved classes in ICAA's core curriculum plus additional elective CE Courses;

  4. Completion of one of the above options plus approved programming offered through an affiliated institution.

EDUCATIONAL INTENSIVES

The Intensive, the ICAA's longest running program, is an eight-day immersion in the core curriculum. The program is designed for professionals and students with limited time, who seek a methodical introduction to the language of classical architecture.

In 2023, the ICAA Rocky Mountain Chapter, in collaboration with the ICAA National Office, hosted a Regional Intensive from August 5th through 12th in Denver. This eight-day immersion in the ICAA’s core curriculum is designed for professionals and students with limited time who seek a methodical introduction to the language of classical architecture. Participants learned how to draw, identify, and compose with the classical elements to form an understanding of the basic tenets on which the classical tradition is founded, culminating in a studio project in which students use the classical canon in the design of a small building.

WORKSHOPS

The ICAA Workshops introduce students pursuing professional studies in architecture and allied fields to the vitality of the classical tradition in contemporary architectural design. Workshops are held both in-person and online. All Workshops provide credit towards the ICAA's Certificate in Classical Architecture.

In-person programs are hosted at schools in collaboration with a university partner and often with a local Chapter of the ICAA. Many of the in-person Workshops are also open to regional practitioners. The program is taught by practicing architects, providing opportunity for students to engage a wealth of professional experience. Students complete a drawing of a classical order and a measured drawing of an architectural element at an historic building. Each workshop includes presentations and directed drawing exercises focused on:

  • Architectural Literacy: Introduction to the grammar of the classical language and underlying principles of composition and building

  • Study of Precedents: Measured drawing as a means of learning from buildings to inspire new design solutions

  • Application in Practice: Presentations by architects who draw upon enduring models of architecture and urbanism in the design of new buildings and places, demonstrating the relevancy of classical architecture to students’ own worlds and future designs
